the bits no. refers to how many millins of colours the screen use.  I run 32
bit at 1024x768.  Unfortunately I'm not at my linux box now -but somewhere
in the .XF86Config file there is a screen resolution section.  Its there you
set the no. of colours and default resolution.  if you have high resolutions
and colours setup you can cycle between them by ctrl alt +/-on the numeric
keypad which takes you up and down resolutions.  Hope this helps a bit.  NH.
