Many on the lists just send it to /dev/null. That said, I rather wonder about whoever told you that you can't capture man ouptut to a file. "man <foo> > <filename>" will capture the output, but will have a lot of "_^H" and "^H_" character sequences in the text file. You can get rid of these in an editor easily enough.
