Something in the I/O chain is requiring too much CPU intervention, either
the NIC or the drives. You do not specify what your drive system is and
how it is configured. If it is IDE is it using DMA? I/O devices that can
run with little input from the CPU are best. I have not used the EE
Pro/100's in Linux servers so do not know how well they operate in loaded
conditions, but I would look at whether using a different NIC that handles
load better might be a better way to proceed. I have been using the 3COM
3C905C's with the 3COM written driver lately for servers with no problems,
and before that I used Tulip-based cards in high-bandwidth servers without
issues.
