I've got the machine back on the network now, but it still feels like a
temporary fix.  I created a
/lib/modules/2.2.16-22 directory and copied the files from the 2.2.17-14.
I tried adding a path line to /etc/modules.conf, and it got me past the
depmod error during bootup but eth0 still didn't load.

>From what I was reading in the man pages on depmod, modprobe, and insmod
searching the /etc for files containing the 2.2.16-22 string wouldn't have
turned up anything - the path line would probably read /lib/modules/`uname
-r`/.

If I could find the line, I could alter it to 17-14, but that would be a
temporary fix too. What will I need to do to have uname -r report back the
2.2.17-14 version? Recompile the kernel? (never done it, but willing to
try =)
