I honestly do have no experience with a problem of this sort. Any thing
in the logs? I am a little confused about the setup.

can you ping localhost?
what if you have ping going in one vterm and startx in another?
A few things I would start on but I really have no idea what may be
happening. Post the results from all these tests and lets see if it
tweaks someones memory.
Also what other hardware is in the machine? Have you tried a differnt
video card? maybe it is hosed and is doing something to the bus. are
both modem and video isa by nay chance? Is there such thing as an isa
video card anymore? Why did the guy in the redshirt always get killed
in Star Trek?
