Really depends on what you want the box for & how you expect to use it.
I
picked up a tyan p5 ATX motherboard for $35.00 a couple months ago.
Stuck
it in a cheap ATX case ($40), put in a floppy ($15), CDROM ($30), IDE
HDD
(used 4.5Gb IBM - $25) a Matrox Mystique 8Mb video card I had, a
Creative
SB 64 card I had, added a new P5/233 CPU ($45) and 64Mb PC100 SDRAM
($38);
So, total to a running system, stand alone, no net card, no modem:
CASE $40
Mb $35
CPU $45
RAM $38
FDD $15
HDD $25
CDROM $30
Video $0
Audio $0
total $228
You can get new parts, if you're careful, off EBay & some of the other
auction sites, and could probably build a full pentium system for about
$300 or less, minus keyboard, mouse, monitor, modem, and ethernet card.
Also remember that most of the "barebones systems" consist of only a
case,
motherboard, cpu, and maybe a floppy drive. So your barebones system
will
come in more like $450+ to the same point. For a PII or PIII system
with
a 400-600 MHz system, I think $450 is doable.
