Trying to get PHP to play nice with MySQL, and I've pretty much come to
the conclusion that the RPM's won't work, and I'll have to home-roll my
own PHP package. :( For the sake of avoiding as much complication as I
can, I thought it might be a good idea to compile PHP with all the same
options Red Hat used, with the obvious exception of the
"--without-mysql" option. So I looked at the file that results from a
"php phpinfo()" command on my RH7 box, and I notice that one of the
options fed to ./configure was "--with-apxs=/usr/sbin/apxs".
Well, I notice that my RH7 box doesn't have apxs installed. I've
learned, from past attempts at this, that apxs is a program that you can
get if you home-roll your own apache, but I have no idea what it's for.
Is it documented somewhere? Can I live without it? I believe that PHP
works properly with apache on my machine, or else I'd never be able to
run the "php phpinfo()" command in the first place -- right?
Any clue why Red Hat would have compiled PHP to expect a program that
isn't installed with their Apache package?
