I am not familiar with this package, but it sounds like you are missing
some of the development packages needed if you want to compile your oen
version. The RPM version works because you have the libraries needed to
actual run the program, and the binarys were built on a machine that had
all the header files needed to compile a program that uses those
librarys.
I would look at the INSTALL file, if there is one included in the
/install/kexplore directory. They will sometimes list the librarys you
need to install the packages. You will have to learn a fair amount if
you want to compile packages from .tar or .tgz packages. There can be
other pitfalls, especialy things like diferent directorys for files,
etc. It can also be fun when you want to upgrade a package installed
this way. Be sure you remove the RPM version of this package before
installing the version you build.
You may want to consider building your own RPM for this package...
