Most likely you have filled up the partition that /tmp is on and the tmp
file that gdm tries to create can't be written.
boot with
linux single
at the lilo prompt and check out your free disk space with df. I'd bet
a dollar to a donut that either tmp or home partition is full.
clean up some space and telinit 5 and you should be jammin'
BTW if you are getting gdm errors on runlevel 3 it sounds like a non
standard install since gdm should not be running on runnelvel 3 on all
the redhat boxes i* have built. Could it have been gpm? seems like the
mouse/terminal tuff wants to create tmp files too.
