Check out the kernel mailing list archives at:
http://www.uwsg.indiana.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/index.html
and do a search on loop. You will see that there are/were problems with the
loop module and the 2.4 series. Perhaps these have been addressed in the latest
kernel builds.
BTW...searching through the kernel archives can be a good way to keep up on
what is broken and status of repair in the latest kernels (especially those with
VIA chipsets.....).
