That does make it harder to recover. I think you will be happy with a
custome compile kernel. One thing you may want to do is to edit
Makefile and change "EXTRAVERSION =" to something specific for your
system, or something like "EXTRAVERSION = SCSI". That way, if you ever
delete the 2.2.17-14 rpm, you will still have your working kernel and
modules. It is just one more safty factor in case you make a mistake.
It has saved me once of twice.
