just an update. i got the bins from xfree86.org(the ones for glibc2.1)
and all went great. had to do some editing on the XF86Config file after
the XFree86 -config, but it works none the less. my wheel works on my
mousemanplus but i am having some problems with xscreensaver.
thanks goes out to chuck again for having a nice searchable archive for
some other questions i had after the installation of the xfree864.0.2.
i kinda rather liked the old config maker for 3.3.6.
but, to tell the truth, i see nothing different in 4.0.2 than i did in
3.3.6. maybe i am missing something, i dont know.
