I left out these details because I didn't think they'd be relevant, but
maybe I was wrong: this system does have a SCSI drive, and / lives
there.
When I first built the box I only had the IDE drive; later I added the
SCSI drive and transferred the system to it, but found that I couldn't
boot from it. From this thread I now understand that my problem may
have been the fact that the IDE drive was still present in the system.
I got around it by telling LILO to wite the boot loader onto the IDE
disk, but still kept / (which contains /boot) on the SCSI disk. This
worked fine up until now. Maybe I'd have better luck if / lived on my
IDE drive?

The dead system is dead because of a damaged keyboard port, not because
of other failures; it's awaiting a replacement motherboard but we don't
have any prior reason to suspect any electronic failures in the system.
