Greetings, all.
I'm having a problem with a RH 6.2 server that's acting as a fax server
for my company. It appears that under heavy loads, the rshd is dying.
And of course, when it dies, most of the faxes that get lost are our
purchase orders which in turn are the most important things we fax.
Faxing is done from an internally developed Progress application that
currently resides on an NCR Unix box. The old fax server is also an NCR
box, but is no longer covered under maint., hence the push to get the
linux box working. The app generates files that are rcp'd over to the
fax server then an rsh command queues the fax.
When all faxes are going through the linux server, I get "Can't get
stderr port: Resource temproarily unavailable" errors on rshd and "Exit
status 1" errors on inetd in my /var/log/messages file. If I split the
workload up between the new and old fax servers, I get no errors on the
linux box.
This suggests to me that we're overwhelming either rshd or inetd with
all of the fax requests. Can anyone tell me what I need to look at next?
Thanks in advance...
Wayne
