if i do 
mt -f /dev/nst0 compression on
something happens but when i type this after
mt -f /dev/nst0 status
it doesn't say if compression is on or off.

This leads to another question i have.
what if i have a drive that does not 
support compression?  can i 
do the below still? without hardware compression?
