I just finished reading an article that discusses these issues. Explains the physical structure of the disk and works its way up to the file system. Author doesn't get overly technical either. It is 'The Linux System Administrator's Guide' (http://www.tml.hut.fi/~viu/linux/sag/). Also available at your favourite LDP mirror under guides.
