While awaiting an aswer to that, let me dive in here...
First of all, uucp is alive and well, though not in as widespread usage
as it used to be. I've been getting mail and news via uucp here at home
since 1992. For an intermittently connected site it works great. That
way I run my own news server and manage my own mail, don't need to depend
on the ISP to hold my mailboxes, and don't need to connect to read news.
Initially it was done via a direct dialup connection, but for about the
last 2-3 years it has been done using TCP/IP (PPP) via dialup as the
transport mechanism. Were I starting afresh now I might use one of the
other tools (leafnode, fetchmail, whatever) but it is set up, it works,
it aint' broke, so I don't want to fix it.
Now, to how to configure it....
1. start by reading the stuff in /usr/doc/uucp*. There is a directory
containing example config files, as well as some other info.
2. read "info uucp" which (in info's hard to read, chopped up way) gives
a lot of info on uucp, including more than you ever wanted to know about
config files (but only if you can navigate your way through info).
3. I can show the OP some examples of my config files, if he would like
to email me off-list. I don't feel like posting them to the world.
