I'm not sure if this answers your question, since I'm not 100% sure
about the details of your problem, but let's try. ;-)
Did you
mv conf.modules modules.conf
Add
alias sound-slot-0 sb
to /etc/modules.conf
(Substitute 'sb' with whatever you'r running as a sound card.)
I may be 100% off here, but lacking details...
