Peter,
I had a chance to look at your files. Some points:
You sent them as two separate files. Is that the way you found them in
/etc/X11 or did you split them for mailing purposes?
You have a section titled Server Layout that does not correspond to
anything in my file. This in in the second file you sent. (I did a
diff on the concatenated two files). Do you by chance have a
multi-headed configuration, e.g. more than one terminal/monitor?
Otherwise, I saw nothing other than what appeared to be cosmetic
differences between your config and mine.
This morning, while fiddling around, I managed to blow up my X
configuration. To fix it, I moved the old XF86Config files out of the
search path and ran Xconfigurator, Red Hat's config tool. To my
surprise, I noted that the configuration is quite touchy. Some combos of
resolutions and memory worked, some didn't. I settled on one
resolution, 1024x768 for my 19" monitor and 32 megs of video ram, which
I know I have, but which is different from X, which only found 8.
(These settings matched what I'd printed out from my old XF86Config file
that had been working before I broke it.) I found that by specifying
multiple resolutions I got really erratic results. Since I have no need
to change resolutions, this works for me.
All this may mean that the driver is in fact buggy. You may want to
move your old configuration files out of harm's way and run the
configurator to see if you can make it work better.
If you give this a go, I'd be interested in what you find.
Regards,
John
