Are you getting any error messages that could give us a hint? There should
be something in the "/var/log/messages" file. Also, as far as I remember
Gnome tends to leave a file in your home directory with a pretty clear name.
It's something like whatever.error or something like that. Any hints there?
Another thing you could try to at least avoid the problem for the time
being and get a working system is to edit the "/etc/X11/prefdm" file as
root (always make a backup copy first by copying the file to something like
prefdm.bak). It's a shell script that should be easy to read. Basically,
if your "/etc/sysconfig/desktop" specifies Gnome as your preferred desktop
environment, line 12 will set the system to launch gdm upon startup. You
may want to change that to "kdm" or "xdm" and see if at least that way
you get a working system.
