Try flush the arp and cache on your Win9x machine: nbtstat -RR (see nbtstat /? for more details). Find out what your arp tables say: arp -a and delete any rogue routes. Also check your default route and netmask via Programs | control panel | network | TCP/IP Properties or run winipcfg.exe from the start | Run menu to see your settings.
If its your Linux/Unix box, check that your default route is set properly via netstat -rn (set it via the route command or netconf). Make sure your netmask and ip address are set properly via ifconfig -a or netconf. Also check your arp tables via arp -a; delete any illegal routes. Man arp for details.

Subject: Ping Error
Something is seriously wrong with our network. A station with Win
9x still believes another workstation exists, even though the other
workstation is disconnected. When it was connected, I was able
to use the other workstation to view the files of the workstation
in question.
Next, I tried to ping the workstation in question from the server,
but it wouldn't work. I tried pinging from the workstation to the
server and it wouldn't work. What's wrong? No ipchains are running.
The cables are tightly connected. Could it be the NIC?
