In mutt 1.2.x and 1.3-1.3.5, the index may occasionally
miss messages in some mailboxes. Symptoms are lines with
no header information (except possibly the date). Viewing such
a blank message fixes it, but messages below may still not
match their index entries. This is triggered by an invalid server response
(courier appears to exhibit this problem). This should be fixed
post-1.3.5 (although it could use more testing), with the pleasant side-effect
of using less memory and disk space, and opening folders faster.
So the solution can be to compile yourself development version of
mutt e.g. > 1.3.5 (latest is 1.3.12) or to use fetchmail.
