Update,
I turned off "video for linux" and rebuilt the kernel. Ok
so far. When I 'make modules" every module gives the
following:

assembler message
warning, changed section attributes for modinfo.

after renaming the kernel and running lilo, when I reboot
I receive a lengthy report of module dependency errors.
Frustrating.

Any other ideas other than scrapping the 2.2.16-22
kernel. If I go to 2.2.17 or 2.2.18 will I have to find an
older gcc to compile with as 2.2.16 needs kgcc to compile.
I'll be back to work on this in the morning.

Thanks,

Bob
