I decided to swap out Xig Accelerated X for XFree86 4.0.1 last
night due to some irritating random system crashes/hangs (no
direct evidence, just suspicion). Went fine, until I tried to
get TT font support working.

First, it seemed that the XFree86 install kit (which I got from
XFree86.org, not from RedHat) overwrote the RedHat xfs. The
plain xfs from xf86 doesn't apparently do TT font support by
itself, so I found the mini-faq on font beautification and
grabbed xfstt. I got that to build and install OK, and it
does its "sync" thing just fine against directories of TT fonts,
but when I try to actually use it it just seems to hang things
up.

Specifically, the behavior I get is that if I set up xfstt (get
it running, with a --dir argument pointing it to a directory of
fonts) and then restart the X server, things mostly work OK until
I try to start an Eterm. The Eterm starts but hangs for a minute
or so until proceeding, apparently normally after that. If I
try an "xlsfonts" within Eterm after that it also hangs.

Should I just give up and get RedHat's xfs back? (I think RedHat's
serves plain X and TT fonts.)
