I read the news too and wouldn't characterize it as a downsize, but in any
case, the great thing about an open source OS is that you can jump ship
whenever you want and find plenty of support from other vendors without
having to worry about things.
Even if RH did go under (which is really unlikely to happen) there are a
couple dozen national corporations (like LinuxCare or IBM), and a few
thousand local consulting firms that will provide commercial support
for your RedHat installations. Many other Linux installations (like
Mandrake) are or were based on RedHat and are fundamentally the same.
Even if somehow all Linux companies and all Linux gurus were wiped off the
face of the planet by a Linux plague, you could grab any half decent Unix
admin and they could support your RedHat for you. Heck, any great Unix
admin could take the Linux source and make it sing.
In short, don't worry about who is going to support your RedHat. Wonder
instead why you've never gotten decent support from that company in
Redmond even though you pay for it. There will always be competitive
support options for Linux, especially for the bigger distributions.
