I have a related question but I first need to
provide a little background. Please read on.
I've been using an opendoc book called "Securing
and Optimizing Linux : Red Hat Edition".
I've followed the advice of the book for the first
few chapters (can't remember exactly how many).
They include proceedures for a custom installation
of the OS, which instructs you as to what packages
to install, and which to NOT install. It also
includes instructions on how to apply general file
system security and such. The last step of this
installation is to patch and re-compile the
kernel.
After performing all of the steps in the
installation proceedures, I attempted to install
the security packages. The book covers these
steps next.
I've run into problems with the installation of
some intrustion detection utilities such as
logcheck. The errors are (and I don't remeber
exact verbage) related to the compilation of the
packages. They refer to the egcs. Which *IS*
installed on the system.
Should the file system security and kernel
proceedures be done AFTER all the additional
software is installed?
Thanks,
kelly

OpenBSD, FreeBSD (v4.1; 4.1.1; 4.2) and Mandrake (they even concocted
mksec "command"). All Linuxen are trying tio fill the gap... step by
step.
