You'll need to install the latest alsa drivers. check out 
http://www.alsa-project.org Their documentation is pretty good. I've 
been working on getting the VIA82C686 integrated audio on my mb working, 
and have gotten decent success with alsa. By decent I mean that sounds 
from games like Chromium and l-breakout work perfectly, but mp3's when 
played from xmms are garbled. Haven't had the time to dig into it any 
deeper...

Or, if alsa doesn't work, I have heard that the OSS drivers work well. 
I've no idea as to the price for the drivers, but they're supposed to be 
fairly inexpensive.
