You bought a Winmodem?  Take it back, since that will NOT work with Linux.
It is NOT a modem in the pure sense of the definition.  Most of the work is
done inside of MicroSh!t Windoze.  Last I heard there are no drivers for
Linux.  Besides, you really don't want to waste CPU power by having your
computer become a modem?

Get a real external modem.

Sure you don't want to get a DSL or cablemodem line instead?
