I've been getting the error message "eepro100: wait_for_cmd_done timeout!"
on one of my servers for some time now and I'm wondering if anyone can shed
any light on the situation.
The network card in question is an HP 10/100 Tx card which uses the
eepro100 driver. I have similar models of cards in all my servers,
although the card in this particular server is older than the cards in the
other servers.
Initially I thought it might be because I hadn't yet compiled a custom
kernel after upgrading to the 2.2.16-3 kernel. The other servers have the
same kernel version with custom kernels and I haven't seen the error
message on them. I finally got around to compiling a custom kernel and it
didn't make any difference - I still get the same error message.
Interestingly enough, the message appears most often for *outbound*
traffic. As a test I used scp to copy a large file from the server to
another server and got a correspondingly large number of error messages. I
then copied the same file back to the server and got *no* error messages.
I'm wondering if the network card is getting ready to croak. It doesn't
seem to be affecting normal network data flow, but perhaps it's only a
matter of time before it does. Anyone else have any ideas?
