It's been awhile since I tested this so I'm a bit rusty, but I think what 
you need to do is this:

1) Make sure the new drive/partition is listed in /etc/raidtab
2) Run '/sbin/raidhotadd /dev/mdX' where X is the raid filesystem in question

I *think* this will add the new drive into the configuration.
