Not true. I've got a 486 that's been running Linux for almost eight years
(Slackware with kernel v.1.13.?) and it knows when DST comes and goes even
when it's turned off. So does my newer machine with kernel v. 2.2.12.
The secret (well, it's documented) is that you set the hardware clock to
GMT (UTC) and tell the system your timezone. Then, when you wake up on
those two Sunday mornings per year, your Linux box will tell you what the
true time is.
