I should have been more explicit.  I understand how to have a static motd 
displayed (of  course one could edit the /etc/motd file to change the 
message) - but that falls under the heading of useful linux tricks.  

The slack box seems to dynamically pull quotes from a 'quote' server.  I've 
scoured the local drives and there are no such quote files.  It is more 
matter of curiousity than usefulness.
