RTFM. Read the Friendly Manual. :-)
Here's how I got my HP 4000N printing beautifually with Linux.
hp.com. Search for your printer model. Read all the docs. Then
search for "unix" or "linux". Read the stuff related to that
(especially lpd related).
Summary: If you use JetDirect cards, setup a remote ldp server on
your linux box. Tell it to use the queuename "auto".
