A very basic RedHat Linux custom install, with just enough to do ipchains
ipmasquerading/firewalling and a few other things, with some swap space,
fits comfortably in 200MB. It's a rather straight-forward
proceedure. To allow access to various services from outside (e.g. web,
mail) its pretty simple to do portforwarding. The advantage of RedHat
install vs something else like LRP: flexibility and possibly
support. While LRP is quite wonderfully supported on its own email
listserve, others may not. People on this RedHat list have talked many a
newbie through setting up ipchains on their small box and then modifying
it to do some additional things. It's the ability to easily do other
things without someone else having to make a special module for you that
makes RedHat more flexible than LRP. (I have used both, and IMHO both are
good and have their place).

There are several sources of info on how to install and configure for
these purposes.

I have turned many 486/33's with 200MB drives and 16MB RAM into what I
call "Internet Connection Boxes" (TM), installing them in community
centers and schools (didn't have the money for the proprietary boxes). You
can follow my installation cookbooks if you wish:

http://www-jerry.oit.duke.edu or (more specifically),

http://www-jerry.oit.duke.edu/linux/bluedevil/HOWTO/ipchains_howto.html
http://www-jerry.oit.duke.edu/linux/bluedevil/HOWTO/ipmasquerade_with_ppp.html

(or try:
http://www-jerry.oit.duke.edu/linux/bluedevil/HOWTO/howtolist.hmtl and
pick from the list)

For a ppp setup, follow instructions in ipchains_howto with additional
setup info for ppp as your internet connection (instead of 2nd ethernet
card for dsl or cable modem connection). It's simple to convert from
dialup to dsl later, too!

Enjoy!
