Some tests:

1. Can you ping the box (i.e., is networking still active)?
-- if YES, basic kernel and networking are still alive

2. Will CTRL-ALT-BS kill the X server?
-- if YES, Linux is alive, X crashed

3. Will CTRL-ALT-F2, etc. go to a multiscreen where you can kill X?
-- if YES, Linux is alive, X crashed

4. Do you have any services running so you can inspect logs to see if
Linux is still running AFTER the lockup? This will tell if the
lockup
is the kernel or X/Kbd/Mouse. For example, my laptop and a friends
desktop lockup sometimes -- but we can still telnet or ssh to them,
but the keyboard/mouse/X are all DEAD.

5. Are you running an SMP box? I sometimes get IRQ hangs on SMP and
someone forwarded a patch to me for
/usr/src/linux/arch/i386/kernel/irq.h
that seems to fix SMP lockups on IRQs.

Good luck,
