You are probably hitting the 2G file size limit in glibc.  Right now,
Linux is limmited to 2G max file size on 32 bit systems unless you do some
patching.  From what I have read, this is a limit on how things are done
in the glibc libs.  There is work being done to remove this limit, but it
will require recompiling user space programs to make it work.
