I did like you said and it all went smoothly.  Now I've got /dev/hdc1
mounted as /usr/lib so that my libraries aren't symbolic links.
Unfortunately, I am still getting those errors.  And the funny thing
is that they are warning me that certain libraries are _not_
symlinks.  I know good and well that library files don't have to be
symbolic links (making them such is what started the whole mess to
begin with).

Any additional ideas?  I sure do hate to see all those warnings.

BTW, for future reference, in a situation where symbolic links won't
do the trick, could you make hard links?  I understand what a hard
link is (I think), but I don't see why you'd use them with symlinks
available.  Also, if you were to remove one hard link, would that
remove the file and all other hard links as well?
