I agree....more isn't always better. I mean, more RAM is always
desireable, and SCSI drives are better, and of course a separate machine
for a database server is a security/performance plus, but none of these is
necessary by any means.
I run a 100MHz Pentium as my development machine in which I duplicate our
colocated server. I use Apache with PHP module, PHPLIB with ALL pages
dynamically generated from templates which retrieve data from files AND
the local MYSQL server. I only have 32 Megs and this machine is plenty
fast enough for little traffic. A couple years ago a 500MHz Alpha was the
fastest thing going and now for some reason everyone thinks that they must
have 2 of the fastest dual-processor Pentiums to serve up an 'under
construction' page to their 10 visitors per month. Remember people, this
is not Microsoft, your mail server doesn't require 764Megs of RAM just to
crawl along and annoy everyone :)
I suggest if you are just getting started, try renting some webspace with
a provider. Ours lets us use multiple domains on the same account, within
the same directory, nice setup. Then configure your machine to match it
and use it as the learning proccess....all the while paying only $40 a
month or whatever to let them worry about security and so forth.
