I don't have anything useful to say, but I thought I'd let
you know that you're not alone. I've never had any success
with the 'perl -MCPAN' method.
I just download and unpack the tarballs and do the old:
perl Makefile.PL
make test
su
make install
exit
(Probably the right place to start to look for tar.gz files is:
http://www.perl.com/CPAN
though I personally usually start from here:
http://www.perl.com/CPAN-local/modules/by-category/
)

I'm not familiar with this trick at all... is there some
reason you would use the "xlynx -source" non-interactively?
I'm inclined to just read through the lists of modules
in either netscape or lynx, and save the ones that look
interesting manually. Are you working on an automated
update process?
(By the way, would this be a good place to stop an complain
that the RedHat generated RPMs for perl modules are always
too out-of-date to want to bother with? Well, let's
consider that taken care of.)
