The only thing you have watch out for is win-modems.  These modems have
been designed to work with windows only.  What they do is use some of the
computer resources for their operation.

As to what is better, internal or external modem this is personal choice.
On my desktop I prefer an external modem.  It is easy to make good
arguments for both.  A quick list of +/- (but not all)

external modem
can reset without affecting the computer
easier to see actual status of the modem
takes up more desk space and requires extra cable
costs more
less difficult to set-up (this subjective)
all are not win-modems (last time I looked)
