I've had no trouble running X apps on remote X servers, the only trouble
with setting it up in Windows is that you need a non-broken X-server
program for Windows, but several exist. Make sure you have xdm running on
your linux machine and configured to listen for connections from your
Windows boxes (by default it is configured to accept local connections
only, this is a "feature").
If you can't get this to work then download a copy of VNC instead, it puts
more load on the Linux box, but it requires practically nothing on the
client side.
