My boss just installed Mailman on a client's co-located server. From
what I've seen it's pretty easy to install and set up. Basically,
from the description my boss said, it's "untar it, run './configure',
run 'make' and run 'make install' and you're done." You may also have
to edit Sendmail to let it know that Mailman is allowed to access it,
but it's almost as easy as compiling any other program. :-)
