Some CD drives are like that. I had one drive (off-brand) which would
INSTALL Diablo2 just fine, but when I went to try to PLAY it, it
wouldn't work, it kept asking for my INSTALL CD, even though that CD
was in the drive. I took it back to where I got it and they said
there were known problems with that drive and Diablo, with reading
the encryption key or whatever off the CD, but the Creative Labs CD I
replaced it with works just fine.

To make a long story shorter, I suspect that the CD drive doesn't
meet the latest specs. See if you can find a BIOS update for the CD
drive, and if not, see if you can take it back to where you got it
and exchange it for something like a CL drive.
