Try hitting "control-alt-+"  if you've selected more than on display
setting you can circulate through them.  Then in your
/etc/X11/XF86Config file find the line corresponding to your server and
your "DefaultColorDepth" such as --
Modes       "1600x1200" "1280x1024" "1152x864" "1024x768" "800x600"

It is the mode directly after "Modes" that is loaded first when you
startx.  Just move which ever mode you want to the front.
