If anyone was watching this thread I was able to fix the problem (I hope). What
I didn't specify in my original msg was that I was getting *no* error msgs at
all; either in /var/log/messages or if I redirected stdout & stder to a file.
This lead me to believe it was a IDE Bus problem on my MB; it seemed like the
only possible answer because hardware problems always seem to leave no trace of
themselves (with the possible exception of my lost hair). I made the educated
guess (how familliar does this sound to the list? ;-) ) and flashed the MB
BIOS. Presto! No more lock-ups.
