Along these lines, it's possible that the directory entry for /home
has been damaged. If a filesystem check has been performed since the
problem occurred, take a look for a directory under /lost+found that
contains your /home files. If it's there, just move it to /home.

df would tell you if this is a possibility. If your disk usage is
still about where it was before, then the files haven't been deleted.

BTW, mounting something on top of /home would make it appear to be
empty, but it would still be visible. /home itself would not
disappear.
