ya, this is assuming the machine is still on and he is logged on as root
currently... if its gone down, then he may have to reboot into single
user mode (or telinit s)

pico /etc/passwd

add this to the first line (although position is not terribly important
, *i think <grin>*)


        root:x:0:0:root:/root:/bin/bash
        
        

and that should be it....

the group file should still be intact with 


        root:x:0:
        bin:x:1:bin,daemon
        daemon:x:2:bin,daemon
        sys:x:3:bin,adm
        
        
        

etc,etc

adduser will work too with all the right command line arguments, etc (If
its been rebooted into single user mode or he just happens to still be
logged on as root since the incident)
