Thanks for the tip. And it worked. found out that RedHat rpm does not have
shadow support compiled. Suse version does(who knows why) anyway between
getting the support compiled and making sure my pam.d/netatalk.

Pat - I've not had any luck with changing passwords through the
chooser but you might have more luck getting answers to your question
at the netatalk admins list where there is plenty discussion and
active development going on... so if it's actually not possible to
change passwords this way at teh moment you may well be able to chat
with the people coding the next versions right now and see if it's a
feature they're able to put in.
