It is already set for both me and root:

speed 9600 baud; line = 0;
erase = ^H;
-brkint -imaxbel

So that isn't going to help.

I don't use vt100.  If I run an xterm, I set it to vt102.
Doing "XTerm*backarrowKey: true" seems to fix it.  I'll have to try
some things to see.
