conf.modules has been deprecated and its use is discouraged.
/etc/modules.conf is now the sanctioned repository. The latest modutils
will install only to modules.conf, but note that even the latest build
of linuxconf has some modules that install to  /etc/conf.modules instead
(sigh.......). It will take a while before all the programs catch up.
Setting up a symbolic link between the two does the trick:

ln -s /etc/conf.modules /etc/modules.conf
